The Story
Private detective Elliot Brick is hired by socialite Velvet Larue to find missing heiress Cordelia Van Dyke before a charity soirée full of nervous donors begins asking the wrong questions.
Cordelia has been collecting names, numbers, and observations in a small black velvet notebook. The people inside it include her fiancé Biff Remington, financial advisor Lester Callahan, bodyguard Bruno Steele, and several powerful figures who would prefer to remain unwritten.
Cordelia reaches the party in a disguise that fools almost everyone. Then she drinks from the one champagne glass prepared for her and dies.
Brick interrogates the suspects, revises several excellent wrong theories, and asks the audience to notice what he has missed. The notebook eventually appears under the mashed potatoes. The decisive clue is simpler: somebody controlled the room before Cordelia entered it.
The case is solved when Brick stops asking who touched the evidence and asks who arranged it.
